How to Optimize Your Website for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini

Search is changing rapidly. People no longer rely only on traditional Google search results to discover products, services, businesses, and information. They are increasingly asking conversational questions through ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and other AI-powered search experiences.

For businesses, this creates a new challenge: How do you make your website visible when AI answers the question before a user scrolls through traditional search results?

The good news is that traditional SEO is not becoming obsolete. In fact, strong SEO remains one of the foundations of visibility in AI-powered search.

Google has confirmed that its existing Search ranking and quality systems remain fundamental to generative AI experiences such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special “AI SEO switch” or secret schema required to appear in these results.

The strategy, therefore, is not to abandon SEO. It is to make your website easier for both people and AI systems to discover, understand, trust, and reference.

What Is AI Search Optimization?

AI search optimization is the process of improving website content so that it has a better chance of being discovered, understood, referenced, or cited by AI-powered search and answer systems.

You may also hear terms such as AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

Although these terms are becoming popular in digital marketing, the fundamentals remain closely connected to SEO.

Instead of focusing only on ranking a webpage for a keyword such as:

“best digital marketing company in Noida

businesses now also need to consider conversational searches such as:

“Which digital marketing agency in Noida is suitable for a B2B company?”

or:

“What should I look for before hiring an SEO agency in India?”

AI platforms may collect information from several sources before producing an answer. Your objective is to make your website one of the useful and reliable sources those systems can discover.

1. Start With Strong Traditional SEO

Before thinking about ChatGPT or Gemini, make sure your basic SEO foundation is strong.

Google specifically states that existing SEO best practices continue to matter for generative AI search because AI Overviews and other Search AI features rely heavily on Google's existing search systems and index.

Your website should therefore have clear page titles, descriptive meta information, logical heading structures, crawlable pages, internal linking, mobile-friendly design, fast loading speeds, canonical URLs where required, XML sitemaps, and properly configured robots.txt files.

Technical SEO problems that prevent traditional search engines from accessing your website can also reduce your chances of appearing in AI-powered discovery.

The first rule of AI visibility is simple:

If machines cannot properly access and understand your website, they are unlikely to recommend it.

2. Allow AI Search Crawlers to Access Your Website

Website owners should also check whether their server, firewall, CDN, security plugins, or robots.txt settings are accidentally blocking legitimate AI search crawlers.

For ChatGPT Search specifically, OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot to crawl publicly available content. OpenAI also notes that allowing the crawler does not guarantee placement; relevance and reliability are still considered when results are selected.

For Google AI Overviews, regular Google Search crawling and indexing remain important. Google states that pages generally need to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet before they can appear as supporting links in AI features.
